Stonehaven crash: UK transport secretary meets first police officer on the scene

The UK's transport secretary says he has spoken to the first police officer at the scene of yesterday's rail crash near Stonehaven.

Grant Shapps says he spoke to PC Liam Mercer, who was one of the first two officers on the scene about four miles south-west of the town.

It has emerged that a member of staff who was on board the train raised the alarm after making their way to a nearby signal box.

Mr Shapps described the scene as "horrendous".

He said: "I come here with great determination to make sure that we do everything possible to make sure, A: we investigate to find out exactly what happened and, B: it doesn't happen again."

Mr Shapps he wants to find out whether the train should have left Aberdeen given the weather conditions, but says he will "leave it to the experts" to find out what happened and why.
