Residents warned homes could flood again as more rain forecast for north east

People whose homes flooded last week during Storm Babet are being told they may flood again this weekend.

The north east is under two yellow warnings for rain, one ends 6pm tomorrow (Saturday, October 28) and another runs from 6am Sunday (October 19) into Monday (October 30).

Both forecast rain to be heavy in places.

Parts of the north east are still recovering from last week's flooding from Storm Babet.

Sepa has issued a flood alert for the area.

It's flood duty manager David Scott says river levels are expected to rise again but not to the same levels as last weekend during Babet, but as the ground is already saturated some water will have no where to go.

He added: "This is a unique situation because of the amount of water that's still on the ground.

"The ground is completely saturated from last week so although it's not as much rain compared to last week any more rain will have an increase in water and river levels.

"Advice is definitely to stay away from rivers, they will be fast flowing and can be dangerous but also to stay away from properties that are going to flood.

"Unfortunately properties that flooded last time, we will ask people to stay away as there's potential for them to flood again."

Local disruption started on Friday (October 27) with trains cancelled and some roads already flooded and covered in surface water.

This is set to continue this weekend and people are being told to check their journeys before they travel.
