The iconic film that took Hollywood to Aberdeenshire is returning to it's home for 40th anniversary celebrations.

Next month, the 1983 film will be shown in the landscapes where it was filmed as part of a special long weekend event.

Cinescapes, who specialise in outdoor screenings in landscapes, will be running the event alongside Aberdeenshire Council.

The event will begin in Pennan Village Hall on Thursday May 25, and continue throughout the weekend with several screenings of 'Local Hero', including at Banff Castle.

The film tells the story of an American oil worker who finds a new meaning of life in Scotland, which was filmed in the tiny coastal village of Pennan.

Many moments of the film occur in the distinct red phone box, where Peter Riegert, who plays Mac, calls Houston to talk business.

During a phone call, he becomes mesmerised with the dazzling Aurora Borealis.

Amanda Rodgers, Director of Cinetopia, told Original 106 how during their launch of the event in Pennan, they were treated to a spectacle of the Northern Lights.
