Hills walkers asked to plan ahead over New Year period

Hill walkers are being urged to plan ahead and be well equipped if they decide to take a walk along the Scottish mountains over the New Year period.

Adverse weather warnings have been in place for most of the week with the latest warning of snow and ice in place until 2pm this afternoon.

The Met Office say ice is likely to form across parts of Scotland and journey times could be affected.

Aberdeen Mountain Rescue Team has written advice for walkers planning to take to the hills this weekend.

Mario Di Maio said: “Many of the incidents which end up with people having to be rescued are a result of them not wearing the correct footwear.

“Even on the warmest days the weather on hills can be cold and windy. There is not a great deal of shelter on any of the tops and getting out of the wind can be difficult.

“So have extra clothes with you and certainly have a jacket to keep the wind out.

“During the winter months it is important to have a hat and gloves and it is always worth carrying an extra layer to pop on when you get to the top.”

He also warned icy paths; short hours of daylight and a strenuous climb can all present hazards at this time of year.

To call Mountain Rescue when out on a walk and require assistance call 999 or 112 and ask for Police and Mountain Rescue.
