Dons goalkeeper Lewis bids farewell to club after seven years and almost 300 appearances

Aberdeen's Joe Lewis is bidding farewell to the north-east as he leaves the club after seven years and almost 300 appearances - despite having a year left on his contract.

He served as a former captain and went on to play 271 times for the Dons, after he joined the club from Fulham in 2016.

Earlier this week, Aberdeen signed Ross Doohan on a two-year deal from Forest Green Rovers.

Lewis admitted calling time on his career in the north-east is "emotional", but he's "enormously proud" to have played for the Dons.

He added:  “I’ve got so many good memories here at Aberdeen, both on and off the field, and I’ve made many friends within the club.

“So it feels quite emotional to be moving. I have no regrets; I’ve always tried my hardest every time I wore the shirt. I’m enormously proud to have captained the club and played as many games as I did."

Lewis lost his no.1 spot to Keele Roos last season, after spending the previous six as the first choice.

He made his debut in summer 2016 against Fola Esch and played in three cup finals during his time at Pittodrie.

Boss Barry Robson paid tribute to Lewis who he hailed as a 'colossal figure'.

"Both on and off the pitch, he has been a leader," Robson added.

“Not only an outstanding goalkeeper, but a proper professional and exactly the type you want in and around your dressing room. I would like to thank Joe personally and wish him well for whatever is next.”

Lewis not only made the club his home, he fully embedded himself into the community and thanks the fans for backing him during his time here.
