Almost a year after Aberdeen City council announced the closure of Bucksburn Swimming Pool, it is set to reopen following extensive campaigning from the public.

The council had announced significant budget cuts across the board, with six libraries in the Granite City also being closed down - though it appears unlikely that these will also reopen.

Councillor Gill Al-Samarai has welcomed the move, after the local authority’s funding cuts to Sport Aberdeen resulted in the closure.

“The public consultation and impact assessment has highlighted issues that Sport Aberdeen had not considered.

"As a council, we’ve now looked at this ourselves and the result of that is we will request the pool is reopened.

"One benefit of that is that there will now be an investment in the pool to bring it back into use”.

A spokesperson from the Save Bucksburn Swimming Pool campaign also expressed their delight at the decision.

“Today finally marks the end of this long and gruelling process, and I cannot portray enough how thrilled and over the moon we are to have all of the hard work behind this cause vindicated”.

Due to works that need to be carried out on the site after being closed for several months, it is expected the pool will reopen to the public next year or in early 2025.
