Braemar marks coldest night of the year as temperatures hit below zero

Braemar in Aberdeenshire marked the coldest night of the year so far as temperatures in the region hit well below zero.

According to the Met Office, Braemar sat at -15.7 degrees which is the coldest temperature recorded since February 2021. 

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is still in place until noon on Thursday affecting the north-east. 

Freezing conditions could get worse over the next few days with schools and travel being disrupted. 

Trains across Scotland have been affected with the RMT Union preparing to strike from tomorrow. 

Braemar and Glenshee snow gates have now opened but the gates at Glen Dye and Cockbridge are closed.  

Drivers are being urged to take care when travelling and spend time de-icing their car before taking off on any journeys. 

Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire Council have continued to treat the roads and pavements as the temperatures continue to drop.
