Asymptomatic coronavirus testing centre opens in Peterhead

A new asymptomatic coronavirus testing centre has opened in Peterhead.

The facility will run for the next 12 weeks - and offers a drop-in service for anyone who wants to get checked for the virus, but does not have any symptoms.

It is operating out of Rescue Hall on Prince Street from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, with the last admission at 7.45pm.

Anyone who lives, works or studies in the town can access the site, with results provided on the day.

A statement from Aberdeenshire Council said: "It is estimated that one in three people with coronavirus do not display symptoms and therefore some individuals will be spreading the virus without realising it.

"Testing without symptoms is entirely voluntary but we urge as many people to do it as possible

"By taking the test - up to twice a week - residents will be able to better protect their family, colleagues and the wider community by ensuring they are not spreading the virus to others without knowing it.

"Even those who have had their first or even second Covid jab should get tested - while vaccinated you can still be carrying and spreading the virus.

"Anyone who recently had a vaccine should wait 48 hours from having the jab before coming for a test to ensure they don't get a void test.

"You don’t have to book for the test and people are being encouraged to pop down when they are returning home from essential trips such as food shopping/collecting prescriptions so as not to make more journeys than strictly necessary.

"Leave 30 minutes after eating or drinking before coming for a test.

"People attending will be asked to self-test by taking a swab sample from the back of their throat or nose. Once tested they will be asked to return home and wait for their results which will take around 30 minutes."

Anyone who is shielding can request a home kit by calling 01467 468820.

People are being urged not to visit the site if they have Covid symptoms, and instead book a test through the normal channels.
