Artists wanted to add splash of colour and eye-catching designs to South harbour opening

North-east artists are being called upon to display their skills by adding colour and delight to the royal opening of Aberdeen's South Harbour.

Port of Aberdeen is inviting local artists to take part in a design competition to paint the 2.17m tall concrete blocks along the South Harbour's north and south breakwaters.

More than 9000 concrete blocks are placed along the harbour to resist erosion from waves and to protect the vessels berthed within.

The winning design will be unveiled at the ports royal opening on September 22.

Lauren Strachan, from the Port, said: "We look forward to reviewing the creative and imaginative designs submitted by local artists, before the winning accropode design is brought to life and unveiled by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal.

"Accropodes are a fundamental feature in the design of South Harbour. The design competition provides a great opportunity for North East artists to have a lasting legacy at a project of national strategic significance."

The public will be able to see the design up close at a free ticketed open day two days later, on September 24.
