Aberdeenshire man to cycle all 21 stages of Tour de France to raise funds for charity

An Aberdeenshire man's putting pedal to the metal as he embarks on one of the biggest cycling challenges in the world - the Tour de France.

Mark Young, from Daviot, near Inverurie, will endure 21 stages of the route which equates to 2,100 miles.

It's organised by Le Loop and he'll begin his journey in Spain's Bilbao on June 23rd before finishing in Paris on July 17th.

He says it's a privilege to be able to take on this test:

While cycling the Grand Loop, Mark's aiming to raise funds for William Wates Memorial Trust - the organisers official charity.

The Wates Memorial Trust supports projects encouraging young people experience severe disadvantage to keep away from antisocial behaviour and crime.

He's raised more than £2,500 of his £3,000 aim.

Mr Young's also training six days a week to get ready for the challenge, but started his fitness regime back in January while working offshore.

The self-employed oil and gas worker's already accomplished several other projects including cycling the Alps in 2021 and from Land's End to John O'Groats in 2019.

He admitted training is crucial:
