The biggest awards ceremony in the sporting calendar is to be held in Aberdeen for the first time ever.
It’s been officially confirmed Sports Personality of the Year 2019 is coming to the new P&J live on December 15.
10,000 people are expected to attend the renowned event, which is hosted by Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan, with millions more tuning in to watch the annual awards.
It’ll be only the second time the award is held in Scotland after it was hosted in the SSE Hydro in Glasgow in 2014.
The ceremony celebrates the sporting achievements of teams and individuals throughout the year, with Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, cycling legend Chris Hoy and cricket icon Ian Botham previous recipients of the main award.
A number of prestigious trophies will be up for grabs, including Greatest Sporting Moment, World Sport Star of the Year, Young Sports Personality of the Year and Team of the Year. Nominations for the Unsung Hero of the Year award open today.
Head of Entertainment at P&J Live, Louise Stewart, commented: “This is a gamechanger for the venue and the city. We are ecstatic to be working with the BBC sports team and the
wider Aberdeen stakeholder group on this flagship event.
“Hosting an event such as this was absolutely at the forefront of the city’s vision when planning this transformational project.”
Director of BBC Sport, Barbara Slater, said: “It’s been an extraordinary year of sport so far with many incredible moments and surely more to come. I have no doubt Aberdeen will be an excellent host city to help us celebrate them.”
2019 has already produced several ground-breaking sporting moments, including the England men’s team winning the Cricket World Cup for the first time, the longest singles final in
history at Wimbledon between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, the England football team getting to the semi-finals of the Women’s World Cup, Tiger Woods achieving his fifth
Masters title, Liverpool lifting the Champions League for a sixth time and Manchester City winning the domestic treble.
Alongside the flagship event, a special BBC Festival of Sport will take place in Aberdeen on the 13th and 14th of December, giving locals the chance to try their hand at a variety of sporting activities, with talent on hand to offer tips and encouragement.
North-east Labour MSP Lewis Macdonald said: “This is a great coup for the city and for The Exhibition Complex Aberdeen (TECA) and the P&J Live Arena.
“The BBC Sports Personality of the Year is one of the highlights of the TV sporting calendar and it is fantastic news that this prestigious event is coming to Aberdeen.
“TECA has only been open since August and is already attracting some of the biggest names in music and comedy. The BBC Sports Personality of the Year is a national event which will help raise the profile of Aberdeen and the North East.”
