Piper Alpha 20th Anniversary

Join Original 106 as we remember the tragic events on the Piper Alpha oil platform on July the 6th 1988, when 167 men lost their lives.

On Friday July 4th, we broadcast a special programme "Piper Alpha - In Their Own Words", including interviews with those who witnessed the horrific events, heroic rescue workers, oil union leaders and key figures from the oil industry.

“…It was traumatic to watch.” – Survivor Steve Rae who frantically swam away from the burning rig.

"…The true heroes of the night were the crew of the Silver Pit (fast rescue craft) who went into the flames and never came out” – RAF winchman Bob Poutney.

We also want to hear your memories of the tragedy. E-mail us at News@originalfm.com

“…it's one of those occasions, like Kennedy being shot, you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing.” – Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond.

Original 106 brought you live coverage of the Piper Alpha memorial service, which took place on Sunday, July the 6th at 2pm.
