MARK McGHEE FACTFILE

1957: Born Glasgow, May 25.

1973: Joins Bristol City as an apprentice.

1975: Transferred to Morton, where he makes his reputation as a strong, aggressive striker, scoring 37 goals in 64 league appearances.

1977: Moves to Newcastle for #150,000 but scores just five goals in 28 league matches.

1979: Transferred to Aberdeen for #80,000.

1980: Wins Scottish Premier League championship medal.

1981: Voted Scottish Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year.

1982: Wins Scottish Cup winners' medal.

1983: Wins European Cup Winners' Cup and Scottish Cup winners' medals. Gains the first of four Scotland caps against Canada.

1984: Wins Scottish Premier League and Scottish Cup winners' medals.

Transferred to Hamburg for #285,000 having scored 100 goals in 263 matches for Aberdeen.

1985: Returns to Scotland in a #200,000 move to Celtic after scoring seven goals in 30 games for Hamburg.

1989: Returns to Newcastle for a second spell, during which he scores 24 goals in 67 League appearances.

1991: May 10 - Takes up his first managerial appointment as a player-coach at Reading.

1994: May - Reading are crowned Division Two champions.

December 14 - Reading are flying high in English football's second tier when McGhee leaves for Leicester.

1995: Unable to save the Foxes from relegation from the Premier League. With Leicester in the hunt for promotion, McGhee resigns after being refused permission to speak to Division One rivals Wolves.

December 13 - Appointed Wolves boss.

1996: Wolves go out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage and avoid relegation by three points.

1997: Wanderers narrowly fail to gain automatic promotion and lose to Crystal Palace in the play-off semi-finals.

1998: Wolves reach FA Cup semi-finals but do not make the play-offs.

November 5 - After poor run of results, McGhee leaves Wolves by mutual consent.

2000: September 25 - Joins Millwall and by Christmas they are top of Division Two.

2001: May - Millwall clinch the Division Two title with 93 points.

2002: May - The Lions finish fourth in Division One after a 3-1 win over Grimsby puts them into the play-offs, where they lose to eventual winners Birmingham.

2003: May - After a season troubled by injury to his squad, McGhee guides Millwall to ninth place in Division One, eight points out of the play-offs.

October 15 - McGhee has his contract terminated by mutual consent with Millwall in eighth place, only six points behind the First Division leaders.

October 28 - Named as manager of Second Division Brighton.

2004: May - Leads Brighton into the Championship after a play-off final victory over Bristol City.

2005: May - Albion avoid relegation by one point.

2006: May - The south coast club are relegated after finishing bottom of the table.

September - McGhee is sacked after a run of three League One defeats in a row sees the Brighton fans turn against their manager.

2007: June 18 - Appointed manager of Motherwell.

2008: May - Motherwell, who had finished 10th in the SPL the previous season, secure third place, qualifying for Europe for the first time in 13 years.

October 2 - Motherwell lose UEFA Cup first round tie against Nancy 3-0 on aggregate.

2009: May - Motherwell finish seventh in the SPL.

June 6 - McGhee reveals he has held talks with Aberdeen over becoming their new manager.

June 12: McGhee is confirmed as new Aberdeen manager.
