“Iconic” Aberdeen hotel ceases trading

It’s understood an “iconic” Aberdeen hotel, which has been operating for more than 50 years, has closed with immediate effect.
The manager of the DoubleTree by Aberdeen Hilton Treetops in Springfield Road has told the Press & Journal that all staff members have been made redundant.
The hotel has also been removed from the brand’s listings.
The venue was not directly run by the renowned chain, despite bearing the Hilton name.
Andrew Martin from the Aberdeen and Shire Hotels Association has lamented the loss of the Treetops, which first opened in 1964.
He said: “I’m a local lad and the Treetops brand was synonymous with quality for many years so it’s very sad to see an iconic hotel enter into a difficult trading situation.
“However, there are difficulties in the market place including non-domestic rates, the cost of payroll and pension contributions.
“In the North-east we’re in a perfect storm where we’ve seen the demand side collapse while the supply side has increased, putting increased pressure on the sector.”
Scottish Conservative north-east MSP Tom Mason said: “This is a huge blow for Aberdeen and absolutely devastating for all the staff who work at the hotel.
“The hotel sector in Aberdeen is continuing to be hit hard by market conditions, especially those outside the city centre.
“Workers at the hotel will have been left in a state of shock at this news which is why they need to be given the appropriate support in finding other jobs.
“The Hilton Treetops first opened in 1964 and is a prominent hotel in the city and it’s deeply concerning that after more than 55 years of trading, it has now closed its doors.
“We have seen several businesses close down in Aberdeen over recent months, mainly spiked by high business rates which companies are having to fork out.”
A spokesperson from Hilton said: “DoubleTree by Hilton Aberdeen Treetops Hotel has ceased to operate under the DoubleTree by Hilton brand.
“Customers can choose from five hotels in Hilton’s portfolio, including DoubleTree by Hilton Aberdeen City Centre, within the Aberdeen area and a further 19 hotels across Scotland.”
