Aberdeen City Council announces swathe of closures amid coronavirus crisis

Aberdeen City Council has announced a swathe of closures to public buildings as fears around the coronavirus crisis escalate.

The Aberdeen Art Gallery is one of the venues being closed by the council

Venues, libraries and local authority services across the city will shut after the government announced updated guidelines urging against all non-essential social contact.  

It hoped the measures will protect employees and the general public, as well as ensuring council services can still be delivered.

The following venues will close temporarily to the general public:  

·         Aberdeen Art Gallery; 

·         Aberdeen Maritime Museum; 

·         The Tolbooth Museum; 

·         Aberdeen Treasure Hub Museum Centre; 

·         Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives Room at the Town House; 

·         Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives at Old Aberdeen House; 

·         Beach Ballroom; 

·         Pets Corner; 

·         Winter Gardens. 

The following libraries will close: 

·         Bridge of Don; 

·         Culter; 

·         Dyce;  

·         Torry;  

·         Cornhill; 

·         Cults; 

·         Ferryhill;  

·         Kaimhill; 

·         Northfield;  

·         Woodside. 

The local authority has said it will continue to monitor and review the situation and updates on re-openings will be announced when known. 

Council Lets 

The council has cancelled lets on all its buildings, including schools, community learning centres and civic rooms until the end of April – new bookings have also been suspended.  


Public access to the Housing Offices at MastrickTillydrone and Woodside Fountain Centre is being halted to allow staff to focus on critical business issues.

The council has promised staff will be available to provide tenants with support in critical business areas, specifically rent management and property management including letting. 

Face to face contact will be restricted to providing support on Universal Credit and benefit claims – viewings and lettings will be by appointment only. Tenants requiring assistance are asked to visit the council website orcontact their local Housing Office. 

Customer Access Points 

The following Customer Access Points have closed: 

·         Kincorth Customer Access Point 

·         Mastrick Customer Access Point 

·         Woodside Customer Access Point (within Woodside Fountain Centre) 


Schools are expected to be closed by the end of the week in response to the latest Scottish Government advice.  Out of School Care provision operating within primary school premises will also close. This includes breakfast provision, after school care provision and holiday provision.
